Please ignore this message if you don't care about case assignment on ARG-ST. I would like to take issue with Stefan Mueller's statement that: > If you do not use the CELR you don't need to assign case on ARG-S I think it makes sense to assign case on ARG-ST anyway. Apart from the argument from the traceless analyses of extraction, there are at least three additional arguments for this position (presented in my paper in the Webelhuth et al. (1999) HPSG volume, and, some of them, also ealier in my Marseille'96 talk). Although none of them really *forces* one to assign case on ARG-ST (what would count as such an ultimate argument, anyway?), I think they together constitute very suggestive evidence: 1. It is not clear how else to assign case to pronominal clitics qua lexical pronominal affixes, as analysed by Miller and Sag (1997) (for French) and Monachesi (1995) (for Italian): these `clitics' are absent from VALENCE, but they still receive case. It seems to me that ARG-ST (or DEPENDENTS) is the only possible locus of case assignment to such `clitics'. 2. Another, conceptual argument comes from the work of Yip et al. (1987) and, esp., Maling (1993), who argue for case assignment at the level of the grammatical function hierarchy, i.e., ARG-ST in terms of HPSG. 3. A somewhat weaker HPSG-internal conceptual argument for case assignment on ARG-ST is that given in Pollard (1994): configurational case assignment would be against the "traditinal aversion within HPSG theory to tree-configurationally-based notions". Even if one ignores the conceptual arguments 2. and 3., there is still 1. to be solved. Best regards, Adam P.S. The references: @Article{mil:sag:97, author = "Philip H. Miller and Ivan A.
