+++ Please Distribute +++ Please Distribute +++ Please Distribute +++ THREE DOCTORAL STIPENDS AVAILABLE Through the generous support of the Volkswagen Stiftung, the Tuebingen-Sofia Graduate Programme in Computational Linguistics and Represented Knowledge (CLARK) will provide doctoral stipends of two years duration starting from October 1998 for three students from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). CLARK will provide a joint teaching and research facility wherein graduate students primarily from Bulgaria and CEE will pursue their researches in the interdisciplinary field of computational linguistics and knowledge representation. The programme will be based at and draw upon the acknowledged and complementary strengths of its host institutions, the Seminar fuer Sprachwissenschaft of the Eberhard-Karls-Universitaet, Tuebingen, Germany and the Linguistic Modelling Laboratory of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria. The scientific coordinators of the programme will be Erhard Hinrichs (SfS), Paul John King (SfS) and Kiril Ivanov Simov (LML). We are seeking highly motivated and talented students who, in return for dedicated supervision, can be expected to complete their doctorates in two years. Though the strengths of the programme hosts lie in head-driven phrase structure grammar, constraint logics, declarative knowledge representation languages, and large lexical knowledge bases, we will entertain proposals for doctoral research in any area of computational linguistics and knowledge representation. Students will be resident at the host sites throughout the duration of the stipend, and each stipend will provide money for residency in Tuebingen and Sofia in accord with German Research Association and European Union scales respectively. The programme will also provide funds for students to attend conferences and travel to, between and from the CLARK hosts. Applicants must (i) be nationals of a CEE country (at least one stipend is intended for a Bulgarian national), (ii) possess by October 1998 a master's degree in a relevant subject, and (iii) have a reasonable command of English (and perhaps another foreign language). Selection of applicants will be made on the basis of a curriculum vitae, two confidential letters of recommendation, a summary of past and present research, and a short (five page) research proposal. The deadline for the receipt of application materials is 30th June 1998. Details about the CLARK programme are available on the CLARK homepage at http://www.sfs.nphil.uni-tuebingen.de/clark.
