Hi, I would be very grateful to obtain any informtion on good platform for *real* HPSG grammar and lexicon implementation. Now we consider two choices: PAGE and ALE. Option to write grammar and lexicon directly on Prolog (like Mueller's Babel) is less interesting. The pro's for PAGE are: 1. its description sounds great. 2. it seems that it allows direct specification of all HPSG constructs. 3. its real time application of lexical rules is the only solution for Hebrew lexicon. ( a Hebrew word can have up to 40 forms. To keep all of them in the lexicon seems unconceivable). 4. It supports construction of large lexicons and grammars (ERGO for example) 5. It claims rich morphological mechanism. (Extremely important for Hebrew) Contra's: 1. I head its underlying logic is poorly understood. 2. It is very slow. ALE PRO's: 1. nice syntax. 2. ALE3 is claimed to be fast. CONTRA's 1. absence of option of run-time applicability of lexical rules. 2. poor morphological analizer. (It seems that ALE was created only with English language in mind and it is not intended for large-scale HPSG descriptions of any language.) 3. I am not familiar with any large scale grammar and lexicon implemented in ALE. Perhaps the information I have is not full and exact. Any comment is welcome.
