I am interested in compiling a list of references on the formal properties of lexical rules. I would also like to start a discussion about the subject. Going through the GPSG-HPSG literature, I have found lexical rules used in different ways. The received wisdom is that lexical rules are redundancy rules, i.e. they specify that if lexical item A is in the lexicon, then lexical item B must also be in the lexicon. But a lexical rule should do more: it should insure that the information contained in one lexical item, i.e. a transitive verb, will not be specified again (and independently) in a related lexical item, i.e. a passive form. Also, there seem to be two different types of lexical rules: derrivational/inflectional, i.e. rules that take care of morphological operations, and "transformational", those that alter the argument structure or the syntactic properties of a lexical item. Has anybody thought of the differences or similarities of these two kinds? What is the current status of the discussion around this issue? If you do not want to answer to the list, you can e-mail me in private (aranovch@lonestar.utsa.edu) and I will write a summary for the list. -Raul Aranovich
