Hi, I am planning to present a paper at HPSG-97 this month proposing a restricted-index analysis for all signs, including those that in Pollard and Sag 1994 have psoa semantics. The index for a VP or sentence, etc., would be parallel to a Davidsonian event variable, and would (potentially) be anchored to an event or state, as the index for an NP can be anchored to an entity in the domain of discourse (aka "the real world"). I believe this kind of analysis would allow significant generalizations between adverbs and adjectives to be reflected in the grammar, allowing for a leaner lexicon. To help me prepare for the conference, I would like those of you on this list who have thought about this issue to tell me what problems such an analysis might encounter, and perhaps why it was not adopted in P&S 94. Thank you for your attention, David Baxter David P. Baxter Department of Linguistics dbaxter@uiuc.edu University of Illinois http://www.uiuc.edu/ph/www/dbaxter at Urbana-Champaign
