As for Frederik's problem, I don't think it is the task of the grammar (modelling competence) to eliminate the kind of ambiguity he encountered. Similar problems in German (with extraposition and V2) are discussed (and partially solved) in an EACL 1995 paper by Frank Keller. If Dutch equals German w.r.t. prosodic structure, an integration of prosodic information could help to eliminate the ambiguity. Such an approach to processing empty verbal heads is described in Batliner et al. (1996), a Coling paper available via langl.gov. BTW: Contrary to Gosse's claim, Netter has never proposed a verbal trace, but an empty verb (hear the difference?). I did.
