Forwarded message: Date: Tue, 11 Mar 1997 12:15:11 +0100 From: Dale Gerdemann <dg@sfs.nphil.uni-tuebingen.de> Subject: Job Ad (Computational Linguist) JOB OPENING: RESEARCH POSITION FOR A COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST UNIVERSITY OF TUBINGEN DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS DIVISION OF COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS We are advertising two research positions in the VERBMOBIL project, which is funded by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). VERBMOBIL is concerned with the development of a portable speech-to-speech translation system for "face-to-face"-communication. The VERBMOBIL subproject at the Department of Computational Linguistics in Tuebingen includes the following two tasks: - Finite State Parsing and Chunk Parsing - German-to-English translations of VERBMOBIL spoken-language dialogues, manual and automatic alignment of German/English bilingual corpora and the construction of a tree bank for the English VERBMOBIL corpus. There is one research position to be filled for each of the two tasks. Candidates for the position in finite state parsing and chunk parsing should have extensive programming experience in C and/or C++, should be thoroughly familiar with the theory and implementation of finite state automata, finite state transducers and robust parsing techniques, and would be expected to contribute to the implementation of a working subsystem of VERBMOBIL in collaboration with other VERBMOBIL sites. Candidates for the position in dialogue translation, corpus alignment and tree bank construction should have native or near-native competence in English, have research experience in English syntax, and be familiar with alignment techniques for bilingual corpora. Knowledge of German is highly desirable. The second phase of the VERBMOBIL project started in January 1997. Funding is guaranteed until December 1998. Contingent on a successful midterm review, funding is expected to be extended until December 2000. Successful candidates would be expected to take up the positions as soon as possible. The positions are at the rank of "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter" (salary on the German payscale of BAT IIa; minimum of 65 000 DM per year). Applications should include CV and an outline of research experience and interests. Names and addresses of references would be helpful. Applications should be sent by mail or email to the address below. Prof. Erhard W. Hinrichs Seminar fuer Sprachwissenschaft Abt. Computerlinguistik Eberhard-Karls Universitaet Tuebingen Kleine Wilhelmstr. 113 D-72074 Tuebingen Germany sekr@sfs.nphil.uni-tuebingen.de Applications received by April 11th, 1997 will receive full consideration.
