I have a query arising from the fact that sentences, as having Content of type psoa, do not introduce indices in HPSG (if I have understood correctly). This appears to lead to two problems which I have encountered in trying to build HPSG-based parsers. 1. Given that semantic roles are assigned to indices, how do sentential complements (of verbs such as "say" or "think") get assigned a semantic role? 2. In relative clauses of the type given below, where the antecedent is a proposition, what exactly binds off the Rel value on the relative clause? a) He made a pass at Mary, which annoyed John exceedingly. I would be very grateful if anybody can shed any light on this, or point me to any relevant discussions. Yours, Howard Gregory
