POSITION AVAILABLE FOR COMPUTATIONAL LINGUIST One position is available for a computational linguist to help develop a machine translation system at TCC Communications Corporation near Victoria, British Columbia. The position will involve close interaction between TCC and the Natural Language Laboratory at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. Tenure is for 1 year and is renewable subject to funding. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Closing date for receipt of applications is Jan 24, 1996. Applicants must possess some of the following qualifications: * experience with machine translation technology * experience with unification-based grammar formalisms * knowledge of (computational) lexicography * experience with C and Prolog programming under UNIX or Windows * a Masters degree in linguistics, computing science or some field related to computational linguistics The successful applicant would be joining an established international machine translation team working on English to Spanish machine translation which will be expanding to include other Romance languages. Good knowledge of at least one language other than English is required. Knowledge of Spanish would also be an asset but is not required. The working language of the project is English. The successful applicant would ideally be prepared to cooperate to various aspects of the project; duties would include: * supervision of bilingual lexical development * testing of grammars and lexicons used in a machine translation system * system maintenance Victoria is located at the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an hour and a half ferry ride from Vancouver on the mainland. It boasts the mildest climate in all of Canada, with it and Vancouver being frequent tourist destinations due to the proximity of the mountains together with the long coastline. Hi-tech industry is growing rapidly in British Columbia, it is now one of the top industries in the province together with tourism and natural resource based industries.
