All, I have just finished a revised draft of the following paper: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- English Relative Clause Constructions This paper explores an alternative to empty complementizer analyses of English relative clause constructions, of the sort that have been adopted by researchers working in GB, Minimalist, HPSG, and Categorial Grammar traditions. The key idea that is developed is a multiple inheritance phrase hierarchy -- a monotonic inheritance system where familiar X-Bar schemata consitute one dimension of grammatical organization, while functional distinctions (relative vs. interrogative, etc.) constitute another. The proposal assumes no invisible syntactic constituents of any kind and contains a treatment of both wh-relatives and non-wh-relatives, including infinitival, that-less, and reduced relative clauses. Also included is a sketch of new proposals for SLASH inheritance, pied piping, and the general treatment of English infinitival constructions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- I have installed a gzipped version in the following file: ftp://csli.stanford.edu/linguistics/rel-pap.ps.gz I would appreciate any comments people might have. If you prefer, I would be happy to send you a hard copy version of this paper. Best Regards, Ivan ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ivan A.
