A few weeks ago I asked about HPSG treatments of German PVP fronting, and was given a couple of papers which I've now read (by Van Noord & Bouma and Baker) - both very interesting and helpful. I now have a small data problem: am I right in thinking that fronted whole VPs are possible only in V2 clauses? I.e. my query is about the grammaticality of (2) compared with (1): (1) Den Apfel essen wird Hans. (2) ? Ich weiss, dass den Apfel essen Hans wird. The reason for asking is that I can't believe that *partial* VPs are possible in V-last clauses, e.g. (4) compared with (3), so I want to know if this is because of a general ban on VP fronting. (3) Essen wird Hans den Apfel. (4) **Ich weiss, dass essen Hans den Apfel wird. ============================================================================ Prof Richard Hudson Tel: +44 171 387 7050 ext 3152 E-mail: r.hudson@ling.ucl.ac.uk Dept. of Phonetics and Linguistics Tel: +44 171 380 7172 Fax: +44 171 383 4108 UCL Gower Street London WC1E 6BT UK
