On that note, I'd like to announce that thanks to John's suggestion, I set up a preliminary Web interface for recent postings to the HPSG list at the following URL (pending possible changes): ftp://ling.ohio-state.edu/pub/HPSG/Log/MailArchives/Archive3/index.html All messages to hpsg@ling.ohio-state.edu will soon be archived automatically. Let me know what you think or if you have any questions. Incidentally, there are a few (")features(") of hypermail that we may want to pay attention to in future postings: 1. Hypermail converts text preceded by forwarding prefixes such as ">" automatically into italics. This only seems to work in the beginning of a message (like in this one). 2. Most Web browsers will make a mess of spacing-sensitive text such as examples with glosses, AVMs, or ASCII trees without special formatting instructions. To that end I suggest that we enclose such text with the hypermail escape sequence for HTML formatted text:

<HTML>...</HTML>. For instance, instead of:

+- +- -+ -+
| FOO | BAR blub | |
| +- -+ |
| BAZ blab |
+- -+

it is advisable to type:

<HTML><PRE>
+- +- -+ -+
| FOO | BAR blub | |
| +- -+ |
| BAZ blab |
+- -+
</PRE></HTML>

(<PRE>...</PRE> are the HTML commands for preformatted text.) This
will keep all the spacings intact in the hypermail output.

Apparently, one can also use two or more dashes ("--") at the
beginning of a new line to indicate preformatted text to hypermail:

--

But I don't know how to switch it back into normal formatting mode, so
we may want to use this sparingly unless we intend all of the
remainder of a message to appear as preformatted.

Btw., these are only suggestions which will make life a little easier
for the maintainer(s) of the Web interface. Postings that don't
conform to the above suggestions can always be retrofitted on the OSU
server to generate more suitable hypermail output.

Enjoy,

--Andreas
