To whom tough-constructions may concern: A student here named Boomee Kim is in the final stages of writing a somewhat unusual dissertation on the tough-construction. She takes a lexico-semantic tack on it, in an attempt to explain why only certain types of adjectives (i.e. certain semantic classes) allow the construction, and how it is interpreted. Among other things, she shows that the subject receives a theta role from the adjective (contrary to a common view that the adjective takes only a propositional argument). I don't have her e-mail address here, but I can find it if anyone is interested. --Steve /......Steve Wechsler, Assistant Professor, linguistics......../ \.....403 Calhoun Hall, U. of Texas (512) 471-1701.............\ /Mail: Ling.
