I'm not the most knowledgeable hpsgist either but i'd like to add something to Ulrich's explanation my students often ask me: why divide the Non Local features into two sets : INHER and TO-BIND and why not cancel the SLASH value directly (according to the SYNSEM value you find as Filler-dtr) ? my ANSWER: what plays the role of a filler does not always occur as a Filler-dtr for example if you look at so-called tough constructions in English you have an adjective, say "difficult", which can take as cplt an infinitival missing its complement, say "to see". what plays the role as a filler can occur either as the subject of a copular construction: This ant is difficult to see or as the head of an NP with a modifying AP: an ant (very) difficult to see how is this handled ? simply by saying that the adjective introduces a To-Bind value coindexed with that of the "filler" noun : S INHER|SLASH {} --------- | | NPi VP INHER|SLASH {} this ant --------- | | V AP INHER|SLASH {} SUBCAT ----------- <NPi,AP<SUBCAT NPi> | | is A VP INHER|SLASH {1NPi} SUBCAT ---------- <NPi,VP[INHER|SLASH{1NPi}]> | | TO-B|SLASH {1NPi} | LOCAL 1 to see INHER|SLASH {1NPi} -
