hello hpsg list-- i'm hoping someone out there might be able to straighten me out, as i'm working from an incomplete (and out-of-date) draft of what was to be volume 2. as far as i can tell, from what bits and pieces i can find about coordination, a coordinate NP has no INDEX specification (at least none that has anything to do with the INDEX specs of the conjuncts--from what i can tell, the mother isn't constrained from having any old index specs at all.) is this true?? what i have (from various sources) is that conjuncts are not heads of the coordinate NP, and thus the semantics principle won't apply, right? (i understand that there's a coordination principle that says that the CAT specification of each conjunct is an extension of that of the mother, but i know of nothing that's said about the CONT specification.) i'd love to hear from anyone working on coordination, or anybody who has more info on this. (not many people to talk to about HPSG down here in the antipodes.) thanks in advance, lynne murphy 104lyn@witsvma.wits.ac.za dept. of linguistics university of the witwatersrand johannesburg 2050 south africa
